Calling All Hand Bike Racers

MBAA will add a hand bike category for the Short Track race at McDowell.  Start time will be after the pro race category at 11:30am. The race will be 20 minutes plus one lap in duration. Course will be on dirt, but may be modified for this class if it is needed. We would love to see 5 racers on the line. More would be awesome. I myself broke my back racing downhill at the MBAA race series in 1999 the day after Bradley Smith broke his and was close to being paralized myself, but I was extremely lucky. So anything I can do to promote this I will. Bradley Smith, Steve Garro, to just name a few I would love to see at the start line.

The 2010 MBAA Race Series

In the best interest of MBAA, our members, our sponsors and our racers, we have taken into consideration all thoughts and opinions and will be utilizing the following race format for the 2010 season. We appreciate your ideas.  That being said the following format will be used for 2010 thus allowing for those who can’t race on Saturdays to race as well as those who can’t race on Sunday’s to race.

We will have a 7 race format this season with 2 dropsYou must complete 5 Cross Country Races including the State Finals in order to be eligible for the State Championship.

Trail Maintenance and Volunteer activities will also be in abundance throughout the season for you to earn your points and to be eligible for bigger prize draw at the end of the season.  You can actually start on either of those now!

3 of the 7 races will be a 2 day format with a Short Track, Gravity Events, Family Events, other events on Saturday and Cross Country Racing on Sunday

The other 4 races will have Cross Country Racing on Saturday with the other events on Sunday.

Along with the Cross Country Series, Short Track Series and a proposed Gravity Series we will be holding an IRON MAN/WOMAN Competition based on participation/placement points. The more events you participate in the more IRON MAN/WOMAN points you will earn. This will be a really cool award.

  1. Jan 9-10 XC Sunday -- McDowell Competitive Track, Fountain Hills
  2. Jan 30-31 XC Saturday -- White Tanks Competitive Track, Phoenix
  3. Feb 20-21 XC Sunday -- TBD*
  4. Mar 20-21 XC Saturday -- Fort Huachuca, Sierra Vista
  5. Apr 10-11 XC Saturday -- TBD* Prescott
  6. May 8-9 XC Sunday -- TBD* Flagstaff
  7. May 22-23 XC Saturday -- TBD* Williams
* All venues being finalized and subject to change

Please continue to provide feedback and suggestions.  We, the MBAA Board have put much time and effort into improving our race series, our relationship with the public, NOVA Youth Cycling, our sponsors, BLM and the Forest Service.  We do look forward to 2010 and the exciting changes it brings.

Upgrades for the 2009 Race Series

Riders may advance as quickly as they wish up to Sport. However, once a rider has upgraded, he or she will not be permitted to downgrade to a less difficult category without making a formal request to USA Cycling. The upgrading of categories will be noted on the racing license by USA Cycling. The USA Cycling Official at the event may record the upgrade of a rider to Sport or to Expert. The official will then contact the USA Cycling Regional Coordinator to record the change. A rider may also contact USA Cycling by email, in writing, or online to change categories.

Beginner racers must move to the appropriate Sport category after placing in the top five in five races. Failure to do so may result in license suspension. From our meeting in August, 3 top five finishes was the target for upgrading purposes.

Sport riders may move up to the expert category after two top five finishes by presenting an upgrade request and a resume to an official or to USA Cycling.

Sport riders must advance to the appropriate Expert category after placing in the top four in five races. Failure to do so may result in license suspension.
