Mogollon Masher Race 6

ImageHIKE, BIKE & RUN Mogollon Masher Race 6

RESULTS

WHEN: Saturday, May 2, 2009

WHERE:

From Payson, take Highway 260 East approximately 30-35 miles to the top of the Rim. As you reach the top of the Rim, you will see a Ranger Information Station on the right. Take a left, on the 300 Rim Road, across from that Ranger Information Station. Follow the signs leading towards Woods Canyon Lake. Take the 300 Rim road for 2-4 miles, or until you reach a stop sign. At the stop sign, the paved road will continue to your right. Ahead of you, the 300 road turns to dirt. Continue straight ahead on the Rim road following the dirt road for approximately 5-7 more miles. This is a very easy, well traveled dirt road that cars can easily navigate.

After about 5-7 miles on the dirt road, you will reach the 208 road. The staging area for the race will be left, or south, on the 208 road, a few hundred yards off the main 300 road. Parking for all racers and spectators will be along the 208 road going right, or north off the 300 road. Racers will want to take a right on the 208 road to park, making certain to park only on one side of the road so that traffic can continue to flow through that area. GOOGLE MAP

Camping:

There is free dispersed camping right on the edge of the Rim just below the staging area on the 208 road. There is more camping going north on the 208 road heading towards Bear Canyon Lake.

There is camping in the Rim Lakes area. There are plenty of RV sites too. Some campgrounds offer showers and more accommodation, while others are pretty primitive.

Some of the best camping is along the 9350 road which you can access close to the staging area. From the 9350 road, it's easier to access the staging area by bike than it is by car due to distance, but the 9350 camping area is right along the race course.

Here is a link to a PDF of a map of the Rim Lakes Area. http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/asnf/maps/RIM_lakes_Map.pdf

Here is a link to more info on some of those campgrounds. http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/asnf/recreation/campgrounds/

On the first link to the Rim Lakes map, you can see the Carr Lakes Trail System, which is the race course. You can also see the 208 road that leads north off the 300 road towards Bear Canyon Lake. What the map doesn't show is that the 208 road leads south off the 300 road, where the race staging area is, and where there is some beautiful dispersed primitive camping.
